Cruncher figured out that Roger Cly faked his own death and revealed this to Carton.
How Cruncher figured this out was that since he is a "resurrection man" (meaning he digs up dead bodies and sells them to scientists for money) he tried to dig up Cly's body to sell after the funeral (in London), but found that Cly's body was actually never in the coffin in the first..all Cruncher found were a bunch of stones.
Jerry Cruncher reveals that Roger Cly is not actually dead, but faked his own death so he could escape punishment for his crimes. Cly's supposed burial was actually a coffin filled with rocks, and he is living under a new identity in Another Country.
Jerry had dug up cly's coffin and knew that it was empty
Jerry Cruncher knew that Roger Cly was still alive because he overheard Cly's associates planning to fake his death to escape punishment. Later, he discovered Cly's body in the coffin being used to transport him out of the country, confirming his suspicion.
Mr. Lorry is appalled at Cruncher because he catches him digging up and stealing bodies from graves for medical experiments. Mr. Lorry is a man of moral integrity and is shocked by Cruncher's illegal and unethical actions.
Sydney Carton is the character who fakes his own death in "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. He does so to help save Charles Darnay, sacrificing himself in order to allow Darnay to escape.
He never digs up an important person in the novel. He digs graves of random people to sell to scientists. He does this because his family needs the money. :) Edit: It might be Roger Cly actually because thats the preson from the funeral.
