* The person who was extremely ill with the flu should have had better manners and called you to let you know and they may ask you to make the decision on whether they come or not and there is nothing embarrassing about you telling them to stay home because you and your guests don't want to catch the flu from them. However, your guests are exposed to the flu every single day and they appear to be a little too up tight to deal with this. The alcohol will kill the germs! Since your guests are making such a fuss you should ask the sick person nicely that you are getting complaints from other guests and would appreciate it if they would leave and perhaps add that you or your mate could drive them home or at least call a cab if they have no means of transportation other than busing it. Also add that you will call them later in the evening or the next day and when they are feeling better you can have an evening together.

What is proper etiquette for opening housewarming gifts When should they be opened When the gift giver gives it Or after all the guests are gone?

* The proper etiquette is for the host, hostess or both to open their gifts in front of their guests, but, in these modern times when there are a lot of guests and everyone is having fun it is sometimes impossible to choose a time to open gifts. If this is the case it's acceptable and the hostess or couple can open their gifts the next day, but they should send out an Thank You Card to show their appreciation.

Does a hostess always have to do what the guest wants even if it involves putting the hostess in a smoking environment when the hostess is allergic?

Although I highly doubt you are actually allergic to cigarette smoke you may be bothered by it as are many folks. As a hostess you should probably create a smoking area outside for your guests that smoke but you are under no obligation to do so. As the hostess you are never obligated to do something simply because a guest wants it. What if the guest wanted to play strip poker or do drugs?
