Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Big Ben, London Eye, St Pauls Cathedral, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Greenwich, Hyde Park, National Gallery, British Museum, Westminster Abbey etc.
The Tate Museum, a repurposed power plant, Olympic Games area, several food stall areas, several street market areas, Check on several design schools- are they open for visits and do they have any student shows. Changing of the guard at palace. St Martin in the field free afternoon concerts, "Buskers" street entertainers in the subway ( underground/metro ) Speakers corner near Iron Gate of Hyde park. Look for some free things to do. Also if you have hobbies at home see if you can find similar groups around London. ( Write and ask if you can visit ) Depending on the time you have- take a 2 day road trip ( railroad ) to Edinburgh. See some country side and get a glimpse of what the rest of the UK looks like. ( The seats in regular class train were very hard to sit on, take cushion. ) PLEASE look/research some more unusual things to do. Look for and find cheap or free things to do, prices can spoil a good time.
Remember most food places have two different prices, 1. is to eat 'in' the second is to 'take along'. Yes they can charge you to eat inside their store. A visit to Harrods is a treat, food court is another world. Try to visit some areas outside of the heart of London. ( Prices can be cheaper and some street stalls have nice take home gifts. )
Treat yourself to the theater. Many restaurants have fixed price pre-theater dinners. ( Oh by the way--the brits refer to desert as a 'pudding'.
Please keep in mind learning some of this stuff BEFORE you go. Write a list. DON"T expect to do everything, but put together a nice bunch of experiences. Smart phone photo record will bring back many memories when you get home. Also share with people on Facebook. Nice way to keep record.
SOFT COMPHY SHOES AND COMPHY CLOTHES A MUST. not sloppy, but comfortable. CHECK long term WEATHER REPORTS, AND BRING SOME CLOTHES YOU CAN 'LAYER'.
