Depending on whether the older adult agrees that the treatment is abusive, then you can take action with them on the phone or call an agency on their behalf. The web link for the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA)should lead you to a local resource. It is difficult to manage this when you are an outsider, but it seems like all of us depend on our community to protect and support us. There have actually been a few postings regarding adult children abusing a parent or an elderly parent. Could you please just post under this and give me a little more information as to what your problem is. Example: What is the adult child doing to you? Have to called the police? If we can have a little more information we can certainly help you. Thanks
If the abuse in physical, it must be reported or it won't stop. While some people feel guilty or blame themselves, the truth is there is no good reason for abusing someone; no matter what the abuser says, this sort of behavior is wrong, and it is also against the law. Reporting a family member to the police may be the last thing you want to do, but sometimes that is the only way to protect yourself. You may also want to speak with a member of the clergy that you trust, or a social worker, and get some advice on how best to proceed. Abuse must not be permitted or it will get worse.
If the abuse is verbal and ongoing, this too must be addressed, preferably by counseling. The most difficult thing can be getting the abuser to recognize that he or she needs help as well-- whether it is learning anger management, seeing a psychologist or (sometimes) having to be arrested. As for you, the victim of the abuse, there are a number of agencies where people who are being battered or otherwise abused can get help. Whether your adult child is willing to accept help or not, at this point you are the one who needs to feel safe. Please make some calls. Nobody deserves to be abused.
A child cannot petition the court, they need an adult advocate or agency to help. If the child is being abused, neglected, or endangered they should speak with a trusted adult: teacher, friend's parent, relative, etc. They could be helped by Child Protective Services but that may end up with the child being placed in foster care. If you are being abused you should tell someone of authority like a teacher, police officer, or doctor. You should never be subjected to abuse.
First contact the police. From there, you should contact your state's department of child and family services if you are a child or if there is a child being abused in the home. If you are an adult and there are no children in the home, you can start with a local domestic violence project if you need help getting out. Or you can just leave.
In the United Stated Child Aid should be contacted. In Canada it is Child Welfare.
Being licensed (in most US jurisdictions) they would be required to report such suspected abuse to the authorities - especially if the person being abused was a minor.
If you believe your child is being abused then you should have already reported it to the local child protective services agency. You should visit the court with jurisdiction over your case as soon as possible and ask to speak with an advocate who can help you file for custody. If you believe your child is being abused then you should have already reported it to the local child protective services agency. As in, the Flash? No. No writer has ever written a story about Wally being abused as a child.
The police.
You go to your local police station and report it. There is little chance of any charges being filed if the statute of limitations is up on it, but it should still be investigated and you may prevent someone else from being done the same way as you were.
Sadism, emotional masochism, narcisism, depression. In other words, join the club! :D
No. Absolutely not. If you are a child and are being abused, there is help available for you. I feel for you in your situation, I was also abused as a child and I understand the pain. Please see the Related Links for some places to get help.
If the child is 18 and is being abused - yes. In any case domestic violence will be punished whether or not the child is a minor.
