I would spend the first day of tutoring the same way you spend the first day of school - get to know the students and find out what they will need from you. If you can, have each student give you a copy of their class schedule, as detailed as they can make it. If their teacher has given them a syllabus, that will be perfect - you need to be able to know what work the student is going to be responsible for, so that you can best help them. Have each student write their name, address, and phone number(s) for you - it might be a good idea to have a folder or notebook with each student's information so that you have everything for that student in one place at all times. Find out what areas of study each student thinks is their best and worst, and have them tell you what they hope to accomplish with your help.
