Well, the first thing to consider is what kind of website do you have, does it have competitors which are industry majors or does the website targets an untapped industry. There are plenty of things you can do to bring your site to the first page and do not use any black hat techniques like paid links and all.
- Firstly, identify your competitors means the kind of websites which display in the top 3 spots in Google.
- Get to know them, do a competitor research to know why they are popular, what keywords they use.
- Also, search what sites link to them and choose sites which are relevant to your niche.
- Write real good "focussed content" on your website, that will bring users.
- If you have a business website, network with fellow business owners in your niche or fellow bloggers
- Make profile of your site in social media and promote it, but don't spam.
There are many more things to it, if you are not sure you can outsource the task as well.
Remember, SEO is not a one day thing and with major search engine like Google which is always updating itself for its betterment and making its user experience better, bringing a site in the first page can be difficult but not that hard.
I'd also recommend leaving out Lycos as if you focus on Google the other search engines generally follow. The key thing is to promote your website. Understand your niche and then reach out to influencers and the more people link to you the better your ranking chances are.
