Depends on what historical period you want, Medieval 2 starts from 1000-1500 with a discovery of a bit of America at the end. Empire you can do sea battles and sail off to North America and India but is harder
Depends on your preference for a specific time period. Medieval II is medieval era civilization and warfare - 11th Century to the 16th Century. Empire is the age of colonization and Imperialism - 1700 to early 1800's. Both are excellent games. Empire is newer, however.
