Here's a basic 3- to 4-month plan:

1) the names of the strings

2) the names of the parts of the bass

3) good basic technique

4) scales (e.g. all major scales one octave, then minor scales one octave)

5) all the names of the notes on the first five frets on each string

6) the pentatonic scale

7) how to read sheet music (reading tabs not recommended)

8) chromatic scale and whole tone scale

9) All the modes in all keys

10) Arpeggios (major, dominant, minor, diminished, half-diminished)

11) 12 bar blues progression

12) walking basslines on a 12 bar blues progression

All the while listen to your favorite basslines and try to play along with them.

Can you learn guitar and bass?

Guitar and bass are very similar. They both have a similar build and use basically the same overall technique, with many nuance differences. The guitar has six strings, and the bass has four. The four strings on a bass are the same as the four lowest sounding strings on a guitar. The biggest differences between the two are that the guitar uses chords and scales, whereas the bass uses mostly just scales, and the guitar has two more strings than a bass. Since the guitar uses chords and has two more strings, it is a little bit trickier to learn than the bass. Therefor, if you know guitar fairly well, you should be able to play bass without ever taking a lesson, whereas if you know bass fairly well, it will be a little bit more effort to learn the guitar.

How do you find the frets on a bass guitar?

Frets are marked on the bass guitar the same way as they are on the electric guitar or acoustic guitar. Metal lines run across the neck. If you're talking about a fretless bass then you shouldn't have to ask this question. It would be a big mistake to try learn the fretless bass before the standard bass. The frets are in the same positions but you should instinctively know where your fingers should be before advancing to fretless
