Any kind of surgical lubricant (like SurgiLube) will work. Don't have any on hand? Use the patient's saliva. You should lubricate the outside of the tube with a water-soluble gel to decrease irritation to the nasal passage and to ease insertion. They don't have to be lubricated it just makes insertion easier. Any kind of sterile lubricant will work. In an emergency you would use whatever you can - such as water or the patient's saliva.
