The lighted portions of the moon look (somewhat) like the letters DOC going from new moon to new moon. A new crescent would have the right side lit.
When the moon looks like a crescent, it is either a waxing crescent or waning crescent moon.
HORNSThe crescent moon end is called the Horn. It's all part of the Moon; the crescent ends are the last lit-up area of the moon. At the crescent, most of the illuminated area of the moon is the other side of the Moon, facing away. The remainder of the side of the Moon that we can see is dark.
It depends which crescent it is. If it is a waxing crescent (on the right side) then it is "growing". If it is a waning crescent (on the left side) then it is "shrinking".
beacause light is on it
There are two crescent moons. One is waxing crescent and the other in waning crescent. Waxing crescent is when less than half the moon is visible on the right side. Waning crescent is when less than half the moon is visible on the left side.
When the sun is on the opposite side of the moon not on the same side of waxing crescent.
The moon is said to be waning during the 14 day period after a full moon when the sunlit side begins to shrink and move to the western part of the moon while the eastern side begins its period of darkness. A crescent moon is when the sun appears on the westerly edge of the moon, a few days before a new moon.
During the course of the lunar month, you see all parts of the near side during full moon. When the moon isn't full, we can't see the shadowed part of the moon except in two circumstances; during a solar eclipse or during the crescent phase - when sunlight that hits the earth briefly illuminates the "dark" side of the moon.
The waxing crescent is when the moon is 1/4 covered by sunlight on it's left side. It is the first crescent in the complete cycle of the Moon Phases. The waning crescent is when the moon is also covered by 1/4 sunlight, but the sunlight is on it's right side. It is the last 2nd/last crescent in the cycle of Moon Phases
This is a waxing crescent Moon. (When viewed from the northern hemisphere.)
waning crescent
a waning crescent is a phase of the moon where the visible part of sunlight side of the moon is a crescent that gets smaller every night until new moon (when you can't see anything).
