First, most people had to produce much of their own food through hunting and gardens. Also, it was often a long distance to the nearest neighbor for many people, and without motorized vehicles, walking, riding a horse, or riding in a horse drawn wagon were the only way to get somewhere, so if you were injured, it was unlikely to find help.
