The only way to determine the proper size air conditioner required is to have a load calculation performed. This takes into account the construction features of the home as well as its' location.
that is the only for sure way to get it dead on, a trick i use a lot is 700 sq per ton on a older house 900 a ton on a newer house

∙ 14y agoOne ton is equal to 12,000 btu, look for a 2 digit # in the model that is divisible by 6 (for 1/2 ton increments). That # is usually the units capacity in 1000`s of btu. So a model # with a 30 in it would be 2.5 tons. (30,000 divided by 12,000= 2.5) a 48 would be 4 tons and so on, usually the range for a home central unit is limited to between 1.5 and 5 tons or 18 to 60 in increments of 6 the model#.

∙ 13y agoIdeally you should not use an air-conditioner at all. Air-conditioners are a large consumer of electricity and and push "peak load" in electricity networks driving the demand for more electricity generation.
A well designed "passive solar" house should not require the use of air-conditioners for maintaining comfortable internal summer temperatures
