The claim made by his followers was that he was 'from the tribe of King David". By their own frank admission however - certainly in the case of St. Matthew - the Gospel writers painted Jesus in a way to make him conform as closely as possible to the earlier prophesies made about the Messiah. There is no evidence that he really was a kinsman of King David's tribe.

In truth, the only 'hard' third party evidence we have about the historical Jesus is about his death, when the Roman historian Tacitus writes that after riots in Jerusalem around Jewish Easter, a few ringleaders were arrested and executed, Jesus among them.
