Evidentally silent running was the rule, in part for camouflage reasons, as slaves were quartered below decks- in a sort of false bottom situation. Not much room for singing or dancing! Also, for similar reasons, males and females were kept in separate quarters. ( this still prevails in most Prisons!) some thangs never change, even if shackles are replaced by say, electronic bracelets.
