Dry erase markers are made specifically for use on whiteboards. The ink in them has a somewhat flaky finish, so the markings wipe away easily with a dry eraser, much like chalk does. Do not use permanent markers or other types of markers, though, as the inks in these will penetrate the surface of the board and stain it.
Expo markers are supposed to be used on whiteboards only, so I would not recommend it.
It is "possible" to use water-based markers on whiteboards, yes, but it is not recommended. You'd need to use a damp cloth in order to remove it. Whiteboards aren't intended to be dampened, and doing so could cause warping to the board itself (depending on the composition of the board). Whiteboards are intended to be used with dry erase pens or dry erase markers, so I would suggest using those instead.
A manufacturer of high quality supplies for whiteboards is Quartet. They make markers, erasers and surface cleaners. Another company is Sanford and they also make markers, erasers and surface cleaners. They are seen in just about all stores as Expo or Sanford Expo.
Some classroom objects include desks, chairs, whiteboards, markers, textbooks, calculators, and computers.
If by "wet erase" markers you mean water-soluble markers, the answer is - usually yes. The surface preparation for dry erase boards (whiteboards) is different from the way you would prepare a surface for water-soluble markers. As a consequence, it is not uncommon for water soluble markers to leave a stain on a whiteboard that requires some other solvent to remove. If a wet permanent marker is used on a dry erase board, it can sometimes be removed with an appropriate solvent, but often the whiteboard will be permanently stained (which you might expect from a permanent marker)
There are several easy remedies for this. Sanford makes a product specifically designed for cleaning whiteboards, but there are a couple of household cleaning solutions that will work--either vinegar, or Oxi Clean.
Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a 4 X 8 sheet of tile board. They will usually cut it to what ever size you need. I recommend putting a coat of car wax on it before you use it. Also there is a difference in markers. Use the original expo markers, as the low odor markers tend to leave a bit of residue on the board. They usually sell the boards for around $11.00.
A whiteboard should not be used with regular markers, as this will make it difficult to remove what has been written or drawn upon it. Dry erase markers are specifically designed for use with whiteboards, as any marks can then be quickly and easily removed by wiping across the surface with a dry whiteboard eraser or cloth. If a regular marker has mistakenly been used with a whiteboard, it is not impossible to remove the marks completely. Various methods of removal can be found online.

some whiteboards are made with a steel backing which makes them more durable and also magnetic. Not all whiteboards are magnetic.
