Every sort of person that may be found in the world may be found in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil is a melting pot of nationalities. That statement is particularly descriptive of Rio.
Rio de Janeiro is one of the leading coastal cities of Brazil, and indeed of Latin America. So it provides one of the first experiences that many tourists and visitors have of the entire country. Among those who tour and visit Brazil, many decide to make their stays regular or permanent just on the basis of Rio's attractive carioca accent, diverse population, interesting history, and wide ranging opportunities.
In the way of examples, there's much to be seen and done in the country's cultural capital. Rio mixes historic and modern architecture, culture and employment. It offers traditional, standard and avant garde training, jobs, business and art. It includes among its communities cutting edge technologists, scientists, researchers, politicians, entrepreneurs, educators and artists.
The one downside to Rio is its inclusion, within its representation of everything under the sun, of slums and human misery in such a gorgeous built and natural environment. Any one who knows and loves Brazil's cultural capital can't help but be saddened by the presence of 'favelas' ['slums']. The expression of heart felt concern over human misery is said most beautifully by French musician Georges Moustaki [b. May 3, 1934]. It's a general expression by Moustaki. But it particularly is descriptive of the one tragedy of Rio's existence. Moustaki indeed zeroes in on the problem and the consequences when he speaks of 'les enfants Qui naissent et qui vivent entre l'acier Et le bitume, ... Et qui ne sauront peut-être jamais Que la terre était un jardin' ['children who are born and lead their lives between steel and concrete ... And who perhaps may never know That the Earth used to be a garden'].
