Woman though hampered by a lack of Rights did what they could such as Organize groups to collect materials needed to sustain the war effort like Metals ect They also Organized welcome home parades and the precursor to the USO.

They managed their homes and families alone while their husbands were serving in the military taking on the tasks of both mother and father, and they did their jobs well. Of course, once the man of the house returned, they were relegated back to the women's sphere in many cases even though they had proved both their value and skill at doing "manly" tasks.

Women also performed the following "men's jobs" with distinction:

  • Women worked in munitions factories.
  • In the United States, women enlisted in the Coast Guard, Navy and Marines and 400 of them died in the war.
  • They worked on farms to maintain food supplies.
  • They worked in canneries.
  • They took over milk deliveries.
  • They cared for POWs.
  • Worked as telephone operators at the front.
