1.8 liter engine is 4 spark plugs
VW bugs have boxer engine, so the spark plugs are right and left side of the engine. You will find them right bottom and left bottom in the engine room. You can't see them only touch them. You can fallow the cabels from the distributor to the spark plugs.

Some Volkswagen models actually came with a diesel engine. Others have spark plugs located under the distributor cap. Once the distributor cap is removed replace the spark plugs one by one as to not get them crossed.
There are no "spark plugs". The 4 on top of engine ( under the black or blue rubber looking harness) are your glow plugs. Then there are 3 to the right side of engine that are glow plug heaters for your engine coolant....At least that's what my mechanic showed me and how he explained it to me.
