Many types of games were played, mostly at the expense of the players. Usually, the players were prisoners of war forced into combat with each other or vicious beasts (think lions). Normally, the games were more bloodfests for the amusement of the violence-loving crowds than actual games. Victory would lead a gladiator to live one more day, but losing almost always ended in death. Take the chariot races, for example. The norm would be to take the loser and tie him to the back of the winner's chariot, then literally pull him to death around the ring, mangling his body so everyone would know that he'd lost.

The Romans had various types of ball games, however we only have a foggy idea of the rules. There was one ball game called "harpasticum" which was a rigorous, rough and tumble type. There were varieties of games where the players formed a circle and passed the ball rapidly around the circle and anyone could change directions of the pass at any time.
