In 1824 there were 24 stars on the flag of the United States of America. The 22nd star was added in 1822 when Missouri joined the union. In 1836 when Arkansas joined the union we added another star for a total of 25.

Because the flag would be pink, white, and blue at a distance. This possibility was foreseen in 1817 when Congress was debating what to do about the five states that joined the USA since 1795 when the flag was changed to have 15-star and 15-stripes. They decided to revert to 13 stripes symbolizing the original 13 colonies that gained independence from Great Britain. A new star, to be added on the following July 4, would indicate a new state in the Union. The 20-star flag became official on July 4, 1818, and new stars have been added 24 more times since then. The last star was added on July 4, 1960, to represent Hawaii.
