World War I was started by the assasination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary (Frances Ferdinand) which was caused by a terrorist group known as Black-Hand led by Slavs who wanted a Slavik state. This lead to allies of both countries involved, Austria Hungary and the accused country (Serbia), to have allies who were eager to fight, having developed new "modern" (at the time) weaponry.
