In 1848 at a sawmill owned by John Sutter a worker by the name of John Marshall finds gold in the trace at the mill. By September 1848 the newspapers in New York and other eastern cities publish letters from the new CA goldfields telling of nuggets "collected at random and without any trouble." All that fall the news spread of the gold in CA. Added to the news was a mention by President Polk in his address in December 1848 of the "accounts of the abundance of gold" in that territory so recently acquired by treaty ending the war with Mexico. By Spring 1849 thousands were enroute to the gold fields. Over 80,000 people came to look for gold and at one point there was a 1,000 mile traffic jam of wagons into the state. Gold was worth 16.00 dollars an ounce in 1848 and about 10 million ounces were mined in that year. In 1852 100,000 prospectors were mining and finding 80 million ounces of gold. Miners could earn 500.00 a month compared to working for 10.00 a month.
