1848 John Marshal found gold flakes in the traces of the saw mill at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, CA. It is located above Sacramento and Sutter knew the moment he heard about the discovery that it would cause a rush to the area. He tried to keep it quite, but failed and in the process lost everything. Within 2 years CA became a state because of the amount of people in the state. On Sept. 9, 1850 CA became a state.

Sutter tried to stop it from getting out but a San Francisco newspaper had a headline about the discovery and soon 10,000 a day were arriving in the area. Over 300,000 people came to the state in the two years after the news. CA became a state in 1850 and Sutter lost everything.
In 1848 at a sawmill owned by John Sutter a worker by the name of John Marshall finds gold in the trace at the mill. By September 1848 the newspapers in New York and other eastern cities publish letters from the new CA goldfields telling of nuggets "collected at random and without any trouble." All that fall the news spread of the gold in CA. Added to the news was a mention by President Polk in his address in December 1848 of the "accounts of the abundance of gold" in that territory so recently acquired by treaty ending the war with Mexico. By Spring 1849 thousands were enroute to the gold fields. Over 80,000 people came to look for gold and at one point there was a 1,000 mile traffic jam of wagons into the state. Gold was worth 16.00 dollars an ounce in 1848 and about 10 million ounces were mined in that year. In 1852 100,000 prospectors were mining and finding 80 million ounces of gold. Miners could earn 500.00 a month compared to working for 10.00 a month.

The most important result of the California Gold Rush was probably the increase in population it caused in California. Before the rush, San Francisco was a village of 500 with a nice harbor. The gold rush made it into a city. Other towns and cities were founded at the same time, and California became a state less than three years after the gold rush started.
