What happened at Harpers Ferry Virginia?

Under the alias of Issac Smith, John Brown, bought a farm in Maryland. Brown, who was intensely against slavery, led an attack on the Federal arsenal in Virginia. His goal was to free the slaves in that State and perhaps start a slave rebellion. The arsenal had the weapons John Brown needed. He was captured by Federal troops and later hanged for treason against the State of Virginia. The Virginia Governor, Henry Wise, was the individual who actually charged Brown with treason. Brown became a martyr for the anti slavery movement in the North.

Why does lee's invasion of the north suggest about his qualities as a general and a leader?

He was known to be an excellent officer before the invasion. In West Point he was first in his class, a well respected officer, and was moving up fast in the army when the civil war started. He had commanded the troops at Harpers Ferry. Lincoln offered him the command of Union troops, but his home state West Virginia was confederate, so he resigned and went to command of confederate army. It is interesting that Grant at West Point in the same class as Lee, but he was the last in the class, he was not well respected, and was considered an looser for the most part. Yet, he defeated Lee.

Which state is Harper's Ferry in and why?

Harpers Ferry is in West Virginia. It was part of Virginia until the American Civil War and was notable for John Brown's raid - which was an act of treason against the United States but he was only tried for treason in Virginia - and for playing a key role in both of Lee's invasions of the North. When West Virginia was carved from the State of Virginia and accepted into the Union as a separate State during Abraham Lincoln's tenure as President it ceased being part of Virginia.
