The first Mother's Day observance was a small service on May 12, 1907 in Grafton, West Virginia, U.S.A. in honor of Ann Jarvis, who passed away on May 9, 1905. It was organized by her daughter Anna Jarvis. Anna Jarvis, with the help of John Wanamaker of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, campaigned diligently thereafter to make Mother's Day a national observance. On May 10, 1908, Mother's Day was observed by the people of Grafton and of Philadelphia. It was made a West Virginia state holiday in 1910. Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "Mother's Day" and "second Sunday in May" in 1912. In 1914 Mother's Day became a U.S. national holiday.

Although (or because) Anna Jarvis is rightly credited as the originator of Mother's Day, she spent the last 25 years of her life protesting Mother's Day due to its commercialism. In 1948, the year she died, she was arrested for disturbing the peace during a Mother's Day protest.

Ironically, Anna Jarvis never became a mother.

Why is it mother's day and not mothers' day It is a day for mothers throughout It's plural right?

Mother's Day is named to honor and celebrate a singular concept of motherhood, emphasizing the role of mothers as a collective. The apostrophe before the "s" indicates that the day belongs to mothers, rather than suggesting it is a day for multiple mothers. While it acknowledges all mothers, the focus is on the idea of motherhood itself, making "Mother's Day" the more widely accepted term.
