Augusta was designated the capital of Maine in 1827, only seven years after Maine officially became a US state. Curiously, this historic town, which is situated on the Kennebec River and boasts a population of roughly 18,560, is the third smallest state capital (after Montpelier, Vermont, with approximately 8,035 residents, and Pierre, South Dakota, with about 13,876). Another interesting fact is that Augusta, Georgia, was also a short-lived state capital, from 1785 to 1795. Georgia, also known as the Peach State, has actually had five capital cities during its lengthy history: Savannah, Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville, and Atlanta, which is currently the state's largest city and has served as the capital since 1868.
