The Appalachians formed when North America and Africa collided. In time, the places separated and so much crust was created that the mountains were no longer at the plate boundary.
West Virginia gets it nickname from all its mountains and hills such as the Appalachian Mountains extend through the eastern portion of the state. West Virginia is called the Mountain State because much of it is in the mountainous terrain of the Appalachian Highlands.
