Correction: There are currently (as of 2009) fifty states and one federal district in the United States of America, not fifty-one states.

The proper question is: What are the names of the fifty states in the USA?

Note: These are correct... I triple checked with several sources. I will also name a few false states, that I have found in my research, posing as "real states." The names of the states listed below are named by their common name, rather than their official name. All states officially begin with either a title of "State of..." or "Commonwealth of". For example, Rhode Island's official name is "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" and Kentucky's official name is "Commonwealth of Kentucky."

Answer (in alphabetical order, not in order of state-hood): Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The federal district, is of course Washington, DC, formally The District of Columbia. This city is bordered by two states, The Commonwealth of Virginia (Virginia) and The State of Maryland (Maryland).

Some false states I have run into, in suprising places, such as Encyclopedias, Universiry Articles, and other "legitimate" educational resources are:

Guam -- This one is actually not that surprising. Guam is an incorporated territory of the United States. The US Congress has determined that the US Constitutions is to be applied to the territory's local government and inhabitants in its entirety in the same manner as it applies to the local governments and residents of the U.S. states. Incorporated territories are considered an integral part of the United States, as opposed to being merely possessions.

Samoa (formally, Western Samoa)-- This one is slightly surprising, but only just. American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of the sovereign state of Samoa. Apparently it is easy for scholars to confuse American Samoa as a synonym for Western Samoa, even though they are actually in truth separate governmental bodies. Samoa is officially an Independent State, and therefore not a United State.

The Philipines -- This one is surprising, when it is included in modern research, but not surprising if it is falsely labeled as a state in earlier sources (but it was neither a state then, nor it is now.). And here is why: The Rebublic of the Phillippines is a country in Southeast Asia, in the western Pacific Ocean. It is a former of colony of Spain, and also a former colony of the United States of America. It is now an Indepedent country.

Micronesia -- Again, not a state. The Federated States of Micronesia is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, north of Papau New Guinea. The country is a sovereign state in free association with the United States; therefore it is a "Free Associated State" and does not possess "united" statehood. Currently the Federated States possess Independence from the U.S. The term Micronesia may refer to the Federated States or to the region as a whole.

Other false states, are often territories under the U.S.'s sovereignty that are proposed possible states... but are not currently states. Currently there are very few of these. The most notable one is Puerto Rico, and is sometimes referenced (albeit inaccurately) as the 51st State. It is currently a Commonwealth, as well as simultaneously a "Free Asscoiated State", but it is not an Independent State. However, it neither possesses official U.S. statehood, nor indepedence from the U.S. government. Puerto Rico has been under U.S. sovereignty for over a century and Purto Ricans have been U.S. citizens under U.S. nationality law since 1917.
