There is a colony called, The colony of Virginia. It is right where the state of Virginia now sits.
I have genealogy notes that state: The colony of Mason, known as Strawberry Bank colony was called Portsmouth after 1653 and came under jurisdiction of Massachusetts Bay in 1641.
New York
Early settlers nicknamed it the "Bay State" because of its proximity to several large bays. In reference to the original Plymouth colony it has been called the "Old Colony State."
The British colony of Jamestown was founded on the coast of what is now the state of Virginia in 1607. The colony was named after King James of England.
they read there bible

South Carolina is a state. and the colony isn't.
Brandywine was a city which was located in New York. Back then states were called colonies. New York was a colony and it is now a state. States were colonies until America won it's independence from Britain.
The British colony of India (also called the Raj) composed the majority of the Mughal territory. A small minority was allocated to the buffer state of Afghanistan (which was not a colony).
If enough people live in that colony, it can request to become a state.
