All or almost all historians agree that firing on Fort Sumter was a terrible idea.When President Lincoln made it clear that any Rebel attacks on Fort Sumter, there would be serious consequences. And, Lincoln also knew he needed a good reason to ask for troops to end the Southern rebellion, the Confederates took the bait and fired on the fort, forcing its surrender. Historians believe that the South was in no position to challenge the US government by secession and armed conflict. Looking back it's clear that since the South had no navy or industrial base to fight a war of independence, forcing Lincoln's hand was a bad idea. Also, the overall advantage the Union had in population, made it able to place almost 2 million men in uniform by the end of the 4 year war. Since slavery was still legal in 1861, a negotiated settlement by paying slave owners a certain sum, as did the UK, was possible. Lincoln tried this throughout the war with the border states. The loss of over 650,000 Americans from both sides should have been avoided. The US Civil War was America's greatest failure.Remarkably, the Union's failures allowed the South to fight almost a winning war against the US.
