The reason for the bicameral legislature dates back to when The Constitution was written. The New Jersey plan wanted every state to have an equal vote, which favored small states. The Virginia Plan called for representatives, with more populated states getting more representatives. In Congress, the Senate is the New Jersey Plan and the House of Representatives is, obviously, the Virginia plan. I'm not sure, but I believe we elect both.
Yes. All of the State legislatures in the United States are bicameral (two houses) except for Nebraska. Nebraska has a "unicameral" single-house Legislature.
It was a bicameral legislature based on the model of the United States Congress. It was transformed into the Texas Legislature upon annexation of Texas by the United States in 1846.Read more: What_is_the_name_of_texas_legislature
The Virginia Plan called for the separation of government into three chief sectors. These were executive, legislative and judicial. A bicameral legislature was created by proportionate representation, who are elected by the people. Small states objected to proportionate representation which was settled in the New Jersey plan.
The states were given equil amounts of representation, regardless of the population. That would mean the representation would be based on the individual states, and not the population.
bicameral
A legislature with two houses is called "bicameral". Among the States of the United States, 49 of them have bicameral legislatures. The exception is Nebraska, with a unicameral ("one house") legislature.
Virginia Plan.
Generally speaking, a legislative body comprise of two legislative chambers or houses is referred to as being bicameral in nature. Specifically, the bicameral legislative body within the United States of America is called Congress. The bicameral legislative body within the United Kingdom of Britain is called Parliment.
The Virginia Plan, in having a unicameral legislature whose delegates are assigned by population (much like having just the House of Representatives), favored large states, because their large populations would give them power.
James Madison drafted the Virginia Plan, and Edmund Randolph presented it to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It proposed a bicameral legislature for the United States.
A unicameral legislature has one body of lawmakers and a bicameral legislature has two bodies of lawmakers. The congress of the United States is bicameral. One body of the legislature is the senate and the other is the house. The legislatures of all the states but one are bicameral. The English Parliament is bicameral. One house is Lords, the other commons.
