Hawaii is the only US state that is not on the North American continent, therefore it is the only one that is not part of the "continental United States". To exclude Alaska also, you would use the phrase "contiguous United States", which means those that are connected.
You may be technically correct, but the phrase "continental United States" in common usage refers to the 48 connected states. These are sometimes called the "lower 48 states" but I don't know why.
