Virginia passed the Virginia Constitution in 1776 saying that white males needed to own 25 acres of improved land or 50 acres of unimproved land in order to vote. This was really good for Eastern Virginia, but Western Virginia didn't like it. Many of their people could not vote because they did not meet the requirements. According to the Constitution, if part of a state wanted to become its own separate state, it needed to have permission from the original state. So in May 13, 1862 Virginia decided to split, forming the state of West Virginia. It didn't become an official state until March 26, 1862.
