Officially, by Census Bureau designations, the Midwest includes North & South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. It is broken into two divisions, roughly defined by which side of the Mississippi River they fall on.
Some states that are officially part of the West or South are sometimes also loosely referred to as Midwestern states, most notably Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kentucky, but such references, though not uncommon, are geographically incorrect.
In the Midwest and Northeast
In 1803, the region that is now the Midwest was primarily part of the Northwest Territory, which included areas that would later become several states. At that time, Ohio was the only state formally admitted to the Union, having become a state in 1803. Other states in the Midwest, such as Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa, were not yet established as states but were part of the territory.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) was created on July 27, 2011. It was founded by seven institutions from the Midwest region of the United States looking to establish a new NCAA Division II athletic conference.
