Georgia was seen as the "heart" or keystone of the Confederate States. The bustling new city of Atlanta was not yet Georgia's capital, but it was a busy railhead and an important supply depot and industrial center. Taking Georgia would sever the Atlantic portion of the Confederacy from the Gulf states, and make it virtually impossible to transport food and materiel between the two regions. Grant and Sherman had a careful strategy in going after Georgia. In March 1864 they planned that Sherman would first conquer the Confederate forces around Chattanooga and Atlanta (Army of the Tennessee), then swing north through the Carolinas and meet Grant and Meade's people in Virginia. This was approximately what happened over the next year, although Lee surrendered at Appomattox while Sherman was still a few hundred miles to the south.

General Sherman's "March to the Sea" began in Atlanta after the fall in July 1864. He broke his line of communication (i.e. supply) and advanced across Georgia to Savannah. After a battle at Savannah, he then advanced due North into South Carolina. The city of Atlanta was evacuated 1 September 1864 and was occupied by Union forces (Army of the Cumberland and the Army of the Tennessee) the following day. Sherman stockpiled supplies in that city for 2 months, then burned anything of military value (locomotive works, warehouses etc). The March to the Sea began on 15 November 1864, passing through the capital of Georgia (Milledgeville) and continuing to the coast (Savannah). Savannah was evacuated without a struggle, although there was a small action at Fort McAlister which reestablished Sherman's lines of communication with the United States Navy. After resupplying his Army Sherman continued the March through South Carolina taking Columbia in February and then into North Carolina, clashing with Confederates at Bentonville in late March of 1865. Both sides stopped near the present city of Durham North Carolina until the Surrender of Johnston's Western Army on 23 April 1865. However the March was not over, for Sherman's forces continued on foot to Washington City (DC) to March in the Grand Review in May of 1865. Sherman's forces had marched through Georgia,South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia, in 7 months, the longest forced march by an Army in the history of the New World.
William Tecumseh Sherman was a graduate of the West Point Military Academy in New York State. He later served as a general in the Cavalry in the Western United States.
Roger Sherman's great compromise of 1787, was an agreement between small and large states reached during the Philadelphia convention of 1787; That in part defined the legislative structure and representation that each state would have under the united states government/constitution.
Sherman's "March to the Sea" went right through the heart of Atlanta, GA -- he burned everything in his path, thus demonstrating a concept of total war. The concept essentially means that Sherman brought the horrors of war, such as hunger, violence, terror, and starvation straight to the Southern homefront through big-time means of destruction. Remember the Rebels stayed in the game early on because of their fighting spirit, in their own battle for states' rights and whatnot. This total war was an attempt to make these Southerners HATE WAR!
Starting in North Carolina, you go through Virginia, then into DC

The Atlanta campaign led to the war ending because the union marched through several states and destroyed them all and then when they got to Atlanta they destroyed the railroad so no transports could get through
Atlanta, Georgia. After the Union troops defeated the Confederates at the Battles of Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge in Nov 1863, the Confederates had to fall back into Georgia. General Grant sent General Sherman to push his troops towards Atlanta, Georgia, the most industrial city in the central southern states. The Battle of Atlanta was fought in July 1864 and Sherman captured the city.General Sherman proposed a bold plan move his army out of Atlanta across Georgia and take the war to the civilian population. His main goal was to crush the will of the people to continue to fight this war. He cut all his supply lines and lines of communication and started on his March to the Sea, arriving at Savannah.

Do you mean the burning of Atlanta during the War between the States (1861-1865). General T Sherman burned a wide swath from Atlanta to the sea at St. Augustine, killing in its wake all food such as garden food and cattle, which of course left the Georgia people with nothing to eat. General Sherman later remarked that "war is hell," and he was in a good position to know that.
Roger Sherman created the Great Compromise! :)
