The California Gold Rush caused a huge population boom in the region. Approximately 300,000 people migrated to the area. Even after the gold ran out, these people continued to fuel the agriculture and other industries that have made California the state that it is today.
In addition, this influx of people ensured California's early admittance to the Union in 1850, officially establishing the United States as stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
Finally, the population boom transformed towns in California, including Sacramento and San Francisco, from small settlements into major American cities.

As gold fever traveled eastward, ovedland mingration to calfornia rose from 400 in 1848 to 44,000 in1850. By the end of 1849, california's population exceeded 100,000, including mexicans, free african american miners, and slaves
Over 10,000 people arrived by foot, boat, train, and wagon a day. Traffic was so heavy at the state line there was a traffic jam. Cities like San Francisco grew into wild cities as ships unloaded miners. From San Francisco they had to go up the Sacramento river to Sacramento to get to the mining camps. Sacramento grew from a fort owned by John Sutter to a city that would become the state capital. The movement of people to the gold fields changed the landscape and mining camps with names like Hangtown, Angles Camp, Columbia, Murphies, Sonora, and others ( they still exist today). The scars on the land can still be seen from the hydraulic mining and the mines that were dug. Finally, in 1850 California became a state in less than a year.
