It's pretty simple. Take the Downtown 2 or 3 (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Fulton Street (at William Street).
Then walk east on Fulton Street until you get to the East River. You will know you're walking east because the next street you'll reach will be Gold Street. If you walk one block on Fulton Street and end up on Nassau Street, then you have walked west, not east.
