There were many naval vessels named the USS California. The one in question was commissioned in 1907, served in the pacific and Atlantic fleets. She suffered an explosion while enroute to NY. Luckily there were only 6 llives lost. Unlucky for those 6. They still don't know what the exact cause was. There was a German submarine in the area, the U-156, but they ruled that out. They thought it was a mine, but due to the location of the blast and the fact that the U-156 carried no mines, that was ruled out. It may have been a fire in a coal bunker that ignighted ammunition in a nearby compartment. There is also a report that someone planted a bomb onboard. Sorry I can't answer your question with a definite answer but even the people who should know don't know. Anyone who does know is either dead or keeping it to themselves.

What happens to decommissioned aircraft carriers?

Nearly all decommissioned aircraft carriers are (sooner or later) re-cycled (scrapped). Rare exceptions are the USS Saratoga which was sunk as a nuclear target at Bikini Island in 1946; and the USS Oriskany which was sunk as an artificial reef in the 21st century. The light carrier USS Independence was also sunk off of California in the 1940's, however, her fate was also the result the of the atomic bomb...she was highly contaminated...and sunk years after the A-Bomb explosion. The USS America may also have been scuttled.

What were the Causalities in the battle of coral sea?

What battleship sunk twice?

Battleship USS Nevada was sunk twice; at Pearl Harbor she grounded herself, so she wouldn't sink in the channel, thus blocking it. After WW2, she was sunk as a gunnery target in the Pacific. Battleship USS Oklahoma was sunk at Pearl Harbor; sold for re-cycling (scrap), she sunk while under tow to California, half way out from Hawaii.

How many us air craft carriers were destroyed at pearl harbor?

It was no longer classified as an aircraft carrier at the time it was sunk. ONE Light Carrier (CVL): 1. USS Princeton-Bombed by airplanes. FIVE Escort Carriers (CVE) (also known as Jeep Carriers or Baby Flattops): 1. USS St. LO-Sunk by Kamikazes 2. USS Bismarck Sea-Sunk by Kamikazes 3. USS Liscombe Bay-Sunk by I-175 (Submarine) 4.
