The USN only lost aircraft carriers in WW2: FOUR Fleet Carriers (CV) & ONE redesignated aircraft carrier: 1. USS Lexington-Battle of the Coral (lost to enemy airplanes) 2. USS Yorktown-Battle of Midway (lost to enemy airplanes/submarine) 3. USS Wasp-Sunk by submarine (I-19); the same torpedo salvo sunk the destroyer USS O'Brian (sunk later) and damaged the battleship USS North Carolina. 4. USS Hornet-Sunk by airplanes and surface warships at the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. 5. USS Langley-Sunk by airplanes following the Battle of the Java Sea. It was no longer classified as an aircraft carrier at the time it was sunk. ONE Light Carrier (CVL): 1. USS Princeton-Bombed by airplanes. FIVE Escort Carriers (CVE) (also known as Jeep Carriers or Baby Flattops): 1. USS St. LO-Sunk by Kamikazes 2. USS Bismarck Sea-Sunk by Kamikazes 3. USS Liscombe Bay-Sunk by I-175 (Submarine) 4. USS Block Island-Sunk by U-549 (Submarine) 5. USS Gambier Bay-Sunk by surface warships. Surviving crewmen state that they were sunk by 18" shells from the battleship IJN Yamato.

In combat; only during WWII: 11 were destroyed; counting the USS Langley (CV-1), which had actually been re-designated as an aircraft transporting vessel at the time of her loss to Japanese dive bombers shortly after the battle of the Java Sea in '42. USS Langley was transporting crated P40 Warhawks when she went down.

1. USS Lexington (the USN's largest carrier during the WWII) was sunk at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

2. USS Yorktown, sunk at Midway.

3. USS Hornet, sunk at the Santa Cruz Islands.

4. USS Wasp, sunk near the Guadalcanal fighting.

5. Light carrier USS Princeton, sunk at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

And 5 Escort Carriers; also known as Jeep Carriers.

For target practice (military experimental), the USS Saratoga (sister to Lexington) was sunk at Bikini Island in '46 by the Atomic bomb (Operation Crossroads). The USS Oriskany, the only Vietnam War veteran aircraft carrier to be sunk, and not re-cycled (scrapped) (besides possibly the USS America), was recently (21st century) sunk as an artificial reef.

first answer:

None. They were all out on maneuvers that morning.

second answer (with more details):

USS Lexington (CV-2) was with Task Force 11 at sea en-route to Midway, about 500nm SE of Midway. It was delivering a US Marine air unit for the island's defense.

USS Saratoga (CV-3) was just arriving at San Diego, California after a short refit at Puget Sound, Washington. It was there to pickup its air units which were left in California for training.

USS Enterprise (CV-6) was with Task Force 8 at sea returning from Wake Island. It was then 200 miles west of Oahu. It had gone to Wake to deliver US Marine air units for the defense of the island.

USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Yorktown (CV-5), USS Wasp (CV-7) & USS Hornet (CV-8) were in the Atlantic Ocean theater of operations.
