The Goths did not conquer Rome.
The Visigoths (Goths of the west) were allowed to settle in the lower Danube area of the empire by emperor Valens in 376. They rebelled soon afterwards and defeated a Roman army, but made peace again. They fought for the emperor of the west against a usurper in Italy. Then their king Alaric I attacked Italy and was defeated. After this he besieged Rome three times and on the last occasion he sacked it. However, is intention was not to conquer Rome. He wanted to force the emperor to appoint him as a general of the Roman army. After this the Visigoths moved to southwestern France. There they helped the Romans to defeat an attempted invasion by Attila of the Huns. Finally they went to Spain.
The Ostrogoths (Goths of the east) were also (later) allowed to settle in the empire. They became deeply involved with Roman Politics. Then their king, Theodoric the Great, was sent by the Roman emperor of the east to invade Italy on his behalf to depose a usurper there. He became king there, but established his capital in Ravenna and left Rome alone. His intention was to revive the Roman Empire in the west.
The might of the Goths was based on two things. One was strength in numbers. We are talking about the migration of whole peoples (probably 100-150,000 people) and not just a restricted number of soldiers. The other was a very large and capable cavalry.
