The third related link contains a May 10 news conference dedicated to the current technology used to stop or reduce the oil spill.

It is correct to state that both conventional and experimental methods are being tried. The cofferdam approach to control (not stop) the oil was experimental. Elements of the top kill approach are experimental, given the depth of the blow out preventer.

The drilling of the relief wells is conventional technology, although when they get close to the well, they will use the latest logging technology at pinpointing the Maconda well location.

What a ethical issues in exxon's valdez oil spill?

The major ethical issues in the Exxon Valdez oil spill had mostly to do with the irresponsibility of Exxon on allowing the ship to still be used with old technology. It was a single hull design. A newer double hull would not have caused such a disaster.

How does the GULf of Mexico and the Exxon Valdez oil spill differ?

Many differences: 1) Exxon Valdez was a tanker accident, therefore the quantity of oil was known. The spill size in the Gulf of Mexico is unknown as oil is still spilling from the wellbore. 2) Wave action was probably more effective in breaking up the oil spill. 3) Oil booms were not available to contain the Exxon-Valdez spill. 4) Other measures to disperse the spill were not available. Surfactants and bio-remediation were used late in the clean up operation. 5) The Exxon Valdez appears to be a more viscous oil than the Gulf spill. No attempt to burn the oil was considered. The Exxon oil was more prone to form emulsions. 6) Due to water temperatures, the Exxon oil was unlikely to evaporate th high end alkanes. In the Gulf spill (and also the Kuwait spill) high temperatures will allow the high end alkanes to evaporate.

Are they stopping the oil spill with hey?

No. The hay idea has been suggested, but as far as I can tell, it is not being used. It was never intended to stop the spill, just help pick up oil. It probably does work, however picking up large amounts of hay and disposing of them might be a problem. They are capturing some of the oil using skimmers. Remember, the spill area is very large, and oil is still coming from the well.
