Among the Hopi, Navajo and others in the American Southwest. Different colored corn has symbolic and ritual meaning.

For the Hopi, blue corn is associated with strength and is eaten for long journeys, is used a baby naming ceremony, relates to winter solstice sunset and is featured in creation stories.

For the Navajo it is important in creation stories, with various Diyin Dine'e' (spiritual beings), and is associated with south named Tsoodził, the Turquoise Mountain, Mt Taylor in New Mexico, in English.
