As of Mar. 9 there are about 295 books with stories ranging from full size novels to young readers books and even game books (not RPG books) which tell a cohesive story. If you want to include comics there are about are about 120 trade paperbacks and another 60 single issue comics which are only available as single issues as opposed to the trade paperbacks which collect anywhere from 4 - 6 issues per trade. As for non-story books I don't want to hazard a guess as they are surely into the hundreds by now.
Star Wars isn't based on books so there aren't "original books". The closest thing that could be considered was the novelization of A New Hope called Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker in 1976.
