The theory used by southerners to justify the secession of the southern states is that the states voluntarily entered into a union with each other, and should be able therefore to voluntarily withdraw from that union should they so desire, particularly since nothing in the US Constitution states that the union is irrevocable.

Why did the radical republicans in congress turn to constitutional amendments to guarantee the rights of african americans?

because if they secured their rights in an amendment, then they can essentially "use" or "gain" more votes for the officials they wanted because the Republicans (North) had secured their rights which ultimately made the African Americans happy/ falter away from the Southerns who had used them as slaves.

Was secession in the US illegal in 1861?

No, secession was neither forbidden nor illegal (use link below for authoritative source information). Virginia was one of 2 nation/states that made the ability to withdraw from the Union a condition of ratification of the Constitution. Those against southern states legally seceding promoted that the Southern states were trying to take down the Union, hence "rebellion" was the term used to permit the use of Federal troops to invade Virginia and other seceeding states. It was after the Civil War that law/laaws were amended or added requiring permission of the Federal Government to secede from the Union. Source: Online Entomology Dictionary, Legality of Secession. President elect Abraham Lincoln viewed secession as being unconstitutional. He was hesitant, however, to use force to forbid states to actually secede.
