The fact that Sacramento began with John Sutter and his fort still influences the city. He planned the layout of the city and his fort is still open for visitors. Then, the gold rush added to Sacramento history and flavor. It was the jumping off point for many miners who came up the Sacramento River to go inland. When California became a state in 1850 Sacramento became the state capital and that brought into the city new political power and influence which remains to this day. There are no Roman influences in Sacramento except for the capital building with its dome and traditional structure of columns. The greatest influence to Sacramento is the Western movement , Spanish California, and the gold rush. Old town Sacramento is the place to experience what the city felt like in the 1800's with it's shops and river cruises.
