A bee hive is an artificial home provided by a beekeeper to keep his bees in. The bees that he or she will have in the hive will be honey bees - Apis Mellifera. There will be one queen, several hundred drones (males) and up to 80000 workers (infertile females).

What kind of bees live in a hive? There are about 3500 different species of bees. They are related to wasps, but differ in that they eat pollen and honey, rather than being carnivores in one way or another. Some bees are social, meaning they live and work together, and they tend to live in colonies. Some bees are loners, choosing to live and work along. Any bee that lives in colonies can be said to live in a "hive." A hive can be a collection of holes in wood, a hollow tree, or a man-made box. What most of us think of as a hive is a man made box. This takes advantage of the bee's natural desire to live in a protected place. These boxes make it easy for bee keepers to move their hives from place to place to collect honey. The bees that live in the box-shaped hives are honey bees, a sub-family of the Family "Apidae." There is only one species of Apidae in North America, Apis mellifera. It is an introduced species, both from Europe, and a hybridized version from Africa, called Africanized honey bees. Differing strains of this species can look a little different, such as color and other markings, they can vary in their aggressiveness and their ability to gather honey, but they are still all the same species.
