∙ 13y agoFish evolved from worm-like chordates around 500 million years ago. Fish greatly diversified, eventually developing cartilage and bones, gills, jaws, and fins.
A group of fish developed lungs for breathing air in their oxygen-scarce water environment. They also developed strong, jointed fins that were able to take them onto the land. Around 400 million years ago they became the first amphibians, spending a good amount of time on land but still laying their eggs in the water.
Amphibians also diversified, and one group grew even more accustomed to living on land. They began to develop harder, dryer skin and began laying hard-shelled eggs on land. The first reptiles evolved between 320-310 million years ago.
