The Kutchin or Loucheux or Gwichin group of eleventribes lived along the Mackenzie and Yukon rivers in Canada, in a very harsh environment. They had to hunt and gather a very wide range of food sources, from plants, fish and small mammals like hare, beaver and muskrat to large mammals such as caribou and moose.
Fishing was mainly limited to the summer months, with pike, salmon and whitefish the favourite catch.
It was a custom among the Kutchin tribes that women could never eat until all the men had finished eating.
