In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, you can obtain Salamence by first catching a Bagon, which can be found in the Orre Region's Relic Forest. After capturing Bagon, you need to evolve it into Shelgon at level 30 and then evolve Shelgon into Salamence at level 50. Alternatively, you can also obtain a Salamence by purifying a Shadow Bagon, which is available from a trainer in the game.

As said above, you cannot keep Salamence and you will not be able to capture it after the first time you encounter it in the Jungle Relic. You can capture when it is flying. That is the most easy way to capture it. To make it fly, draw a loop around it once.

The trick to catching Salamence in Pokemon Ranger is strategy. You have noticed that Salamence flys alot and crashes down. The trick to capturing it is using various PokeAssists. Try capturing a Fighting-type Pokemon before hand - or if you can't capture or take a Pokemon into the challenge, use Plusle or Minum's Assist. Circle Salamence quickly while it is paralysed. The rest is all up to skill and chance. Update: Personally I don't find a reason to use your Poke Assist, just wait for it to jump into the air, if you really are scared of it coming down to early use Plusle or Minun, but otherwise you can see it's shadow and just circle it's shadow, the shadow becomes bigger as it comes crashing down (I think, it's been so long since I caught Salamence)
