It depends on your current membership. Some games won't let you play online unless you have a gold or higher (if there is a higher, i don't know really) membership, so if you don't have a golden membership, you can't play online for certain games.
Try going to account settings and go under the membership part to see if you are still paying the bill for XBOX:LIVE. And if that dosent work try creating a new account and try re-joing XBOX-LIVE again.
