What supported Wagner's theory of continental drift?

Several evidences were given as proof to the theory of continental drift, they include; 1. Climatic evidence (Paleoclimatic Reconstruction). 2. Fossil evidence (Paleontological proof). 3. Continental fit. (Continental margin shapes). 4. Lithological and Stratigrapical similarities of adjacent continental masses. 5. Seafloor spreading. 6. Glacial till. 7. Plate tectonics.

Why was Alfred Wegners continental drift theory ignored?

Alfred Wegner's continental drift theory was ignored because he didn't have enough proof to show everyone that tectonic plates were moving. The supercontinent Pangaea sounded like a big fantasy to everyone back then.

What evidence supports the hypothesis of continental drift?

Continental drift is a hypothesis so there is no actual proof or evidence of it, but rather opinions and views suggesting the possibility of it.

Why do you think people didnt believ his continental drift theory when wagener first explained it?

because he had no proof to show how the continents moved he only had bits of evidence that the continents might of been together one time but no explanation of how they moved

What does the theory of continental drift explain?

The idea that the continents were once one super-continent and subsequently moved apart is the basis of the theory of continental drift. Continental drift was first proposed as a scientific hypothesis with evidences by Alfred Wegener early in the twentieth century. Unfortunately, the evidence he was able to cite, such as similarities in coastline geographies and fossils on either side of the Atlantic, did not provide an explanation for the mechanism which caused it to happen. In Wegener's theory, the continents were somehow able to plow through the oceans. It wasn't until the mid-twentieth century that the Atlantic Ridge system was discovered. Further investigation revealed that the magnetic orientation of rock on either side of the ridge matched the orientation on the other side of the ridge, providing the proof for the mechanism that caused the continents to move apart. Basaltic magma was infilling the area on either side of the ridge to create new continental crust. Subduction of older, denser oceanic crust takes place at collision zones where it meets less dense oceanic and continental crust. The whole process is driven by gravity and heat from the Earth's interior via convection currents in the mantle. The process is no longer called continental drift, but is referred to as plate tectonics.Alfred Wagner's theory was that the sea floor was spreading, causing the continents to 'drift'. The theory was originally tossed aside because the fact that the continents fitted together was not sufficient.

Why was the theory of continental drift accepted?

There was no visual proof

What was the major problem with wegners theory of continental drift?

The main problem with Wegners theory of continental drift was that at the time he proposed it he had no real proof.

Where did wegener look for proof that would support his theory of continental drift?

fossila and landforms

Why did scientists argue against Wegners continental drift hypothesis?

Because wegner didnt have proof to show what caused mountains.

Why was the theory of continental drift not accepted first?

scientists back then didn't want to belive that the earths plates could move on there own

What is the theory of plate tectonics is about the .?

the proof is that the continents fit together as a puzzle and they were once joined as a super continent known as Pangaea and because of plate tectonics they drifted away, Go see the Continental drift theory

Why the continental drift is not rubbish?

We have proof that continental drift is not rubbish. The proof is that animals that don't live or ever have lived in that space are found (but rarely) in those places where they don't/never have live in.

What couldn't Wegner identify about continental drift?

he couldn't figure out what was causing it, and he didnt have proof.
